Why a working system can still cost you money

  1. Your plan makes daytime power expensive. Free-nights plans pay for that free window by raising the daytime rate — often to 16–20¢ per kWh.
  2. Your panels produce during the day. That's the expensive window, which is exactly where solar should be saving you the most.
  3. But if your usage moved to nights — because nights are free — your solar has nothing left to offset, so it exports to the grid instead.
  4. Exports pay 3–5¢. So power worth 16–20¢ to you leaves the house for pennies.
